Under the Tree of Life | A Mother’s Day Weekend in New Orleans

This Mother’s Day weekend, I had the absolute honor of photographing three beautiful families beneath one of New Orleans’ most iconic (and sacred-feeling) landmarks: the Tree of Life in Audubon Park.
What started as a few planned sessions turned into something unforgettable — including a spontaneous shoot with a sweet couple filming a wedding announcement video! Yes, I cried. And no, I’m not sorry.
There’s something about that tree — something ancient, peaceful, and full of quiet storytelling. It was the perfect place to document motherhood in all its beauty, strength, and softness.
The Tree of Life — A Place Rooted in History
Did you know the Tree of Life is estimated to be over 300 years old! Officially named the Étienne de Boré Oak, this Southern live oak is one of the oldest and most beloved trees in New Orleans.
Its branches stretch wide — some touching the ground — and span nearly 160 feet. It’s been the backdrop to countless memories: weddings, engagements, family picnics, quiet moments of reflection.
They say if you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of giraffes from the nearby zoo peeking through the trees.
Why I Chose the Tree for Motherhood Sessions
The Tree of Life isn’t just beautiful — it’s sacred. It feels like the kind of place where time slows down, breath deepens, and your heart starts whispering again.
As I photographed these Mother’s Day sessions, I kept coming back to this one truth:
This tree is a mother’s love.
Its strong roots remind me of how mothers hold families steady — through every season. Its stretching limbs speak of how they reach toward light, toward growth, while offering shelter and strength. The tree endures, nourishes, and expands — just like her.
I wanted these sessions to feel that way. To feel grounded, tender, and quietly powerful. Not just about perfect poses, but about presence. The way a mama tucks hair behind her child’s ear. The way generations gather beneath her love like a canopy.
As the poem I shared with each family reads:
At the roots, there is love.
Beneath the branches of the Tree of Life, I saw it clearly —
how mothers are made of both soil and sky.
They reach, like limbs stretching toward the light,
while holding everything steady at the ground.
To all the mothers, the ones who gave us life,
and the ones who helped us grow —
thank you for being the roots, the trunk,
the canopy of love we live beneath.
Beneath that tree, I saw it clearly:
Motherhood is a living legacy.
And I was so honored to help tell its story.
The Sweetest Surprise
Before my first session, I crossed paths with a couple filming a wedding announcement video.
They. Were. Gorgeous! I couldn't help myself, I had to get some pictures of them. I asked, and they were thrilled. Within minutes, we were capturing a spontaneous, joy-filled moment that felt straight out of a romance movie. We laughed, they twirled, and I had the privilege of freezing their love under that timeless canopy. It was magic.
Planning a Visit to the Tree of Life
If you ever find yourself in New Orleans and want to visit (or better yet, book a session!), here are a few tips:
- Location: Audubon Park — near East Drive & the Audubon Zoo. Just search “Tree of Life New Orleans” on Google Maps.
- Best Time: Golden hour — the light through the oak leaves? Unreal.
- Parking: Free street parking is nearby, with a short walk to the tree.
- Bring: A blanket, water, maybe a snack, and bug spray if it’s humid.
- Pro Tip: Weekday evenings are quiet, dreamy, and perfect for a peaceful session. Mornings are even quieter.

What This Weekend Meant to Me
This weekend reminded me why I do what I do.
It’s not just about making beautiful images. It’s about telling the truth of your season — the messy, the joyful, the cherished — and capturing it with tenderness and intention.
